Ann Glanville Restoration Project
The Club’s original gig, Ann Glanville, built by Ralph Bird and launched in 1990 has been the Club’s main training gig for the last 18 years. She is named after the famous Saltash woman, Ann Glanville, who plied the trade ‘Waterman’ in the 19th
century, ferrying goods and passengers across the Tamar. Ann and her all female crew regularly competed successfully in local regattas and perhaps most famously, took on an all male crew in Le Havre, France which they won.
Until 2002, Ann Glanville was also used as the Club’s main racing gig, being used regularly on the circuit throughout the season and is still competed at the World Championships on the Isles of Scilly and the County Championships at Newquay every year. She is put through a lot of work during the year, and wear and tear is now starting to takes its toll. Estimated costs for her to undergo the repair work needed are estimated at approximately £7000.
Any fundraising ideas, grants, donations etc, gratefully received in order to restore Ann Glanville to her former glory. The Club recently held an ergo row from ‘Saltash to Le Havre’ at the recent Saltash Regatta, were people were asked to donate £1 and row a minimum of 500 m on the ergo. It took 2 days to get from Saltash to Le Havre but we made it (!) and the first contribution towards Ann Glanville’s repair work was raised. Thank you to all those who took part in order to achieve this.
If you would like more details or to make a donation, please contact Nicola Davey or Leanne Kent (see contact section).
New Gig
With the ever rising bar of competition and with the strength and depth of rowers that Caradon Gig Club have, it has been decided that we should start fundraising towards purchasing a new racing gig for the Club. This would enable the Club to have three racing gigs, providing not only the ‘A’ crews, but also the ‘B’ and ‘C’ crews with a competitive gig to row at the World Championships every year. The ideal scenario would also be to raise the money without having to sell any of our other gigs, allowing us to keep two training boats.
The cost of a new gig is £20k – so get fundraising!! Any ideas, contributions, grants, events that could raise money towards the costs of a new gig gratefully appreciated.
For more details, please speak to Nicola Davey or Leanne Kent (see contacts page).
Finally we would like to thank Seasalt Cornwall for supporting us in the World Pilot Gig Championships in the Isles of Scilly. Seasalt Cornwall is the first fashion brand in the UK to have organic clothing certified to Soil Association standards.
