County Gig Championships
Caradon Ladies A, based in Saltash have finished the 2008 season in fine form with a fantastic 2nd place in the County Gig Championships held in Newquay at the weekend. A total of 81 crews from Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset and the Isles of Scilly entered the Championships, held on the 6th and 7th September. Caradon Ladies A and Caradon Ladies B crews, both won their first round heats convincingly to progress through to Round 2. Despite putting up a valiant effort in big seas to finish 4th in their Round 1 heat, Caradon Ladies C Crew did not have a fast enough time to progress to Round 2. Due to the worsening weather conditions on the Saturday, all racing was postponed after the completion of Round 1, meaning that four rounds would be run on the Sunday, weather permitting. Racing got underway promptly on Sunday morning. Caradon Ladies B crew rowed brilliantly in Round 2 and the Quarter Finals to reach the Semi Finals. Despite missing out on a place in the final, they were the only B crew, along with Falmouth B to reach the top 12, a fantastic achievement. Caradon Ladies A crew secured their place in the final and put in a superb performance, pushing Falmouth A all the way in a very close race to finish 2nd for the second consecutive year, ahead of Charlestown A in 3rd, Newquay A in 4th and Mounts Bay A in 5th. Roseland A were unfortunately disqualified for an incident that occurred on the first mark. Caradon will be fielding 3 mens crews in the Mens Championships which are due to take place on 20th and 21st September, and 1 junior crew in the Junior Championships taking place on 21st September. Overall results for Caradon Ladies: Ladies A – 2nd
